On March 3rd, Danish singer songwriter Anna Scharling will release her debut album entitled 'Sleeping At The Gates'. We spoke to her about her musical background, the album and what else she's been working on. NMR: 'Your songwriting is based around the minimal use of instruments, often just piano or guitar. I was wondering if that was based on the instruments you learnt first as a child or more to do with musical influences later on?' ''I think it was the other way around actually, my musical influences as a child came from the simplicity and beauty of a few instruments. I remember the song "A case of you" by Joni Mitchell as the reason why I started playing the guitar. I was 12 years old an

Baula - new single 'Just Like Yesterday'

Last May we introduced you all to the band Baula who had released their debut single 'Don't Bother'. The Swedish / Icelandic duo were formed in 2015, played off venue gigs at Airwaves festival and at the time had released just that one single, just under 3 minutes of melancholy pop with the highlight being a lovely well written piano line. The good news is that they're back with a new single entitled 'Just Like Yesterday', and what I like about this track is that it is still has a distinct Baula sound, but this time the track is led by guitar, which takes the song in a different direction. The melancholy vocals remain, it has that laid back feel and there is a lovely melody that drifts throu

Bellman - new single 'Can You Feel It'

Just a quick mention to the outstanding new single from 'Bellman' which has reached us this week, ahead of his brand new album Morphology which is released on Friday 27th January. We haven't had the opportunity to feature Bellman up until now, as his last album release was back in 2013, but all his albums are definitely worth listening to, if by any chance you haven't come across him before. The new single is entitled 'Can You Feel It' and it is a beautifully serene track, shoegaze influenced with an edge to it, and the added electronica never overly dominates the track. The gentle weaving melody and dreamy vocals are both beautiful to listen to, and we are are really excited now about the

Over the Trees - 'From the Sidewalk' single

We've been hugely remiss in not covering Norwegian band 'Over The Trees' previously, as we have had them on our new music playlist for sometime now, but we're pleased to correct that with details of a (fairly) new single 'From the Sidewalk' ahead of an album which is due sometime soon. 'Over The Trees' are an Oslo based quintet, and their music is expansive but fairly mellow Indie Rock, and the fact that they have received extensive coverage in numerous music blogs over the last few months is a demonstration of the positive impact of their music. The first thing to stand out about 'Over the Trees' are the plaintive and emotional vocals of songwriter Eivind Frustøl, and 'From the Sidewalk' is

Introducing.... 'White Jackets' with debut single 'Circle'

After featuring 'Is This Really Me' and 'Whale and the Village', we're staying in Finland for a new band who released their debut single last week, but already have an album recorded and due to be released in just a couple of months time. 'White Jackets' come from Vaajakoski and whilst they may not pass our 'Googlability' test for new band names (unsurprisingly the search just comes up with pictures of 'White Jackets'...), their single 'Circle' certainly has made an impression. The strength of this track is in the simple melodic writing, which has a laid back feel you can just enjoy for the warmth of the dreamy tune. In particular I like the arrangements, the subtle use of additional instru

'Is This Really Me' - 'The Iron Door'

Whilst we might be a few days into 2017, there are inevitably releases from 2016 which we haven't yet covered, and Finnish band 'Is This Really Me' have had their album out entitled 'The Iron Door' for sometime now. I originally heard a couple of the tracks two or even three months ago, but the full album wasn't available to stream, so it's been great to hear the whole thing - particularly as I was reminded of the likely good quality of the whole album by its inclusion in the forever excellent 'One Chord to Anothers' favourite Finnish Albums of 2016 - along with Matti Jasu and others. So 'Is This Really Me' are a Helsinki based folk pop band, who write soft understated and generally lovely

Whale and the Village - new Video and Album!

We have a few album reviews being drafted right now, but we'll kickstart 2017 with a new video from a Finnish Folk band that we had some lovely feedback about after we wrote about them back in November 2015. 'Whale and the Village' are from Turku, often mentioned on this website as it is the home of a number of bands we've featured including The Stillwalkers and the excellent Matti Jasu. Anyway 'Whale and the Village' released their first album early in 2015, and their follow up is due to be released on the 3rd February and it is entitled 'Second'. From that album they've released two singles, 'Revolving Door' and 'Some Days', and you can watch the music video for the first one of these bel
