Sanna Martinez – ‘Better This Way’ (single)

Sanna Martinez doesn’t really sound Swedish but she is. She has gained a reputation as a writer or co-writer of numerous songs, including those that competed in Iceland's and Poland's Eurovision Song Contest competitions, and she has also been heard in the American TV series version of ‘Love Island.’ She’s been in the business since she was a small child but only now with this single, ‘Better this way’, does her solo career begin.

She’s doing that by way of engagement with a new Stockholm-based company, RIKA Music Group, which was founded in May 2020, working with both recognised and young, talented Swedish music creators and artists.

She certainly has international connections, with co-writers of this song coming from Sweden, Iceland and Lithuania.

The song is very American in tone and I could imagine it being played as background music to ‘Love Island’ with its simple message that it’s better this way, without you. It’s breathy and repetitive with that equally simple melody line so popular with the likes of Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Carly Rae Jepsen, perhaps Selena Gomez and Ariane Grande. And those little oohs, aahs and groans that such artists come up with. It seems to be ready made for the North American market.

But there’s nothing actually to dislike about it. It’s a nice song, sweetly sung by someone who, visually, looks like she could walk straight down Rodeo Drive, Valley Girl name ‘n all, and blend right into that market.
