It’s quite some time now since I last looked at what Copenhagen-based indie/electronic music composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Anders Trentemøller was doing so this came as quite a surprise, and a pleasant one.
I was also taken aback by the size of his following on social media, which amounts to almost half a million people on one site alone. But then he has been around for some time, releasing six albums along the way, the most recent being in October 2019 (‘Obverse’), garnering high scores in ‘album of the year’ lists and amassing award nominations.
His ‘trademark’ sound according to the PR lies somewhere between indie and electronic and I would say that is pretty accurate. Depending on what mood you’re in, you can hear a variety of electronic artists in there, from M83 to Jean-Michel Jarre yet at the same time he stamps his own style here on a piece of music which is both soothing and stimulating at the same time. A track to chill to but also to get behind your national team to, as they stage a late rally in the Euros.
It is also one which goes down better with some visual stimulus which I why I selected this video, and which I recommend you watch in full screen view. There are parts of it towards the end which remind me of astronaut Dave Bowman’s trip into the Stargate in ‘2001 – A Space Odyssey’ – and beyond to be reborn as the next stage beyond mankind. And yes, the music would have fitted it very nicely, too.
‘Golden Sun’ is released on Trentemøller’s label In My Room.
