I wrote way too much on Army of Moths, so I’ll finish the week with a quick mention to a Mexican lo-fi dream pop / shoegaze band that captured my attention not just because of their music, but because of finding a song title of theirs that matched the exact words I’d just used 15 minutes previously.
‘Twitter Makes Me Sad’ was the name of the song and the band are unobtrusively called Yellow Dudes, and they’re a 5 piece band that come from Tepic in the Nayarit region of Mexico. Now for those of you who have slightly sketchy Mexican geography, the best way to explain it is that it’s closer to Puerta Vallarta than it is Cancun. Similarly to Love Sport whom we featured yesterday, the band comes from childhood friendships, and they’ve been playing together for a few years, first releasing an EP entitled ‘Backstage Escenario’ in 2018 before more recently releasing an EP entitled ‘Parking Spot’.
The lo-fi nature of the 6 tracks on the EP means there are some imperfections, but there are a couple of songs that appealed, notably ‘Twitter Makes Me Sad’, partly of course for that title, but I like the bands influences, which unashamedly come from 90’s indie shoegaze bands such as Slowdive, maybe some Lush, Curve, Chapterhouse, Spirea X and similar bands from the era too. The vocals are pretty melancholy, but I like the guitar sound throughout, and I’d love to watch these guys live in a small underground venue in Tepic, or somewhere similar.
This is ‘Twitter Makes Me Sad':
You can find them on Bandcamp, Facebook or Instagram, but I can’t find them on Twitter, and that makes me sad too.
