I’ve got four (yes, that’s four) Nordic post-rock releases to highlight this weekend, and for my Album of the Week recommendation I’ll jump back to January for a beautiful and evocative release from After-Math, entitled The Undiscovered Country.

Behind the project sits Swedish (Scottish-born) musician Lawrie Welsby, whose music is completely new to me - and a very welcome surprise. Largely instrumental, this is one for those who appreciate patient builds and atmosphere over instant hooks. The opening track, ‘The Undiscovered Country’, is particularly impressive: it genuinely feels like arrival, stepping off a ship into vast, unspoilt terrain. The organ-led introduction, with its complex shifting rhythms, gradually gathers force into something expansive and quietly majestic.

‘See You on the Other Side’ maintains a gripping intensity, ‘Hiraeth’ introduces vocals from Dutch singer Lisette Lowe for added warmth, whilst I particularly like ‘Fear No More the Heat o’ the Sun’ for its searing guitar contributions.

The whole thing is immersive, cinematic and transporting - ideal if you want to properly switch off from the world, or even sail off the South Devon coast to discover Thatcher Rock and declare it as.an independent post-rock country.

Release Date: 9th January 2026
