“If the world is at stake, but you feel nothing.” That’s how Bellefolie describes ‘Beautiful Madness’, and it turns out to be an accurate way in, with opening track ‘Modern Apathy’ setting the tone perfectly. Lyrically it gets your mind working straight away: “Apples hoppin’ off trees into modern apathy, they don’t sound alive at all, staring into coloured walls”, a line that neatly sets out the albums temperature.
While the opener quickly grabs your attention, it’s the instrumental sections where the album really comes into its own for me. The climax of ‘Your Gates’ is particularly effective, while ‘In the Clouds’, previously featured here by Andy, remains a standout track, with a natural ease that’s hard to resist. French influences and references are scattered across the album giving it an even richer feel, with the luscious strings in previously unreleased ‘La Montagne’ introducing a beautifully melodic and more uplifting track than others on the album - it’s possibly my favourite.
Nothing here feels rushed or overstated; ‘Beautiful Madness’ exists contentedly in its own thoughtful and slightly detached world. But unlike the world we live in, the more time you spend with the music, the more it makes sense.
The album is released through our friends at Apollon Records. Also please check out her upcoming tour on Social Media, which includes a date in London on Tuesday 10th February.
Record Label: Apollon Records / Fosse Records.
