I’ll catch up on the last 3 months of enforced absence by trying to cover as many albums as possible, and Misty Coast (led by Richard Myklebust and Linn Frøkedal) are a great place to start, as their new album ‘Always Sun’ is a timeless melodic dream pop release, which is easy to get to grips with on 1st listen thanks to the melodic intent, yet complex enough instrumentally to offer months of repeat listening pleasure . It’s their 5th album and the already released singles are heavily weighted towards the front of the album, with the breathless ‘Spring’ an early favourite, and Frøkedal‘s vocals reminding me of early shoegaze bands such as Lush, alongside a swirling guitar accompaniment. ‘Blessed’ is another highlight, with a mesmerising opening and intense fuzzy instrumental support that borders on the brutal, yet ‘Puzzle me Gently’ is catchy and playful, and concluding track ‘Sway’ reflective, switching between opaque and moments of clarity. However despite its depth, ‘Always Sun’ is actually fun to listen to, possibly their strongest album melodically with easy tunes at the heart of the album, and it sounds like the duo are really enjoying themselves. Definitely recommended.

Release date: 24th April.
