Gothenburg’s three-piece all-girl band Chivvy is one of my ‘Tips for 2021’, their debut single ‘Red Water’ having impressed me last November.
That song is about captivity and escape, the longing for freedom and a better world. It is from their debut album (under this name, they were previously The Tape), but a release date for that is not yet known.
‘In Control‘ will, I guess, will also be on that album. They are Sweden’s best kept secret right now.
In Control is about “choosing to love, listen and respect yourself and your dreams. To dare to live your life as you want too. It’s about being your own best friend, to spend time alone, break up with the past or the present and to live and dare to be happy - for yourself.” A bit of the old selfishness never did any harm as Saga Norén discovered in the final episode of The Bridge, chucking her cop badge into the Øresund Sound before driving off into the sunset. This could be her song.
Chivvy produce an interesting sound, and one I haven’t heard for quite some time. It’s in the realm of New Order meets Siouxsie and the Banshees. Definitely worth a listen.
In Control is released today (22nd January) through Novoton.
