Where shall I start? A blistering single from an Australian band who offer an interesting mix of âcolour and chaosâ? Sounds good to me. Theyâre called Fan Girl, not to be mixed up of course with our Swedish friends Girl Scout (heading to the UK soon) or Norwegian indie band Mall Girl, and theyâve just released new single âthe last oneâ.
The Naarm / Melbourne based quartet have been around for a few years now, releasing an album (âElephant Roomâ) and a steady stream of singles, which includes the likes of the excellent âfallingâ released last August, and more recently the high energy âstupidstupidâ.
But itâs their new single which has particularly appealed, released just this morning (Thursday 9th May) itâs a brooding, heady indie track with pummelling guitars beautifully intertwined with a flowing piano line, and some stunning dynamic contrasts. Itâs dark, intense and utterly brilliant.
Theyâve clearly been experimenting with new ideas, as the band explain âOver the last few months of writing, we have been toying with new sounds, prying open the artistic can of worms, and following our guts, and this song was the first that just landed right where we wanted it.â
Sounds interesting. Look forward to their new EP, which is promised soon.
Now normally I make overly optimistic comments about how great it would be see bands like this playing here in the UK - preferably Manchester, if weâre to be choosy. But these guys are literally thousands of miles away, so surely thatâs not going to be possible? Well I guess weâll have to wait and see, but if they do ever make it then weâll buy them all a (decent) pint of beer with more than 3% ABV.
