Where shall I start? A blistering single from an Australian band who offer an interesting mix of ‘colour and chaos’? Sounds good to me. They’re called Fan Girl, not to be mixed up of course with our Swedish friends Girl Scout (heading to the UK soon) or Norwegian indie band Mall Girl, and they’ve just released new single ‘the last one’.
The Naarm / Melbourne based quartet have been around for a few years now, releasing an album (‘Elephant Room’) and a steady stream of singles, which includes the likes of the excellent ‘falling’ released last August, and more recently the high energy ‘stupidstupid’.
But it’s their new single which has particularly appealed, released just this morning (Thursday 9th May) it’s a brooding, heady indie track with pummelling guitars beautifully intertwined with a flowing piano line, and some stunning dynamic contrasts. It’s dark, intense and utterly brilliant.
They’ve clearly been experimenting with new ideas, as the band explain “Over the last few months of writing, we have been toying with new sounds, prying open the artistic can of worms, and following our guts, and this song was the first that just landed right where we wanted it.”
Sounds interesting. Look forward to their new EP, which is promised soon.
Now normally I make overly optimistic comments about how great it would be see bands like this playing here in the UK - preferably Manchester, if we’re to be choosy. But these guys are literally thousands of miles away, so surely that’s not going to be possible? Well I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but if they do ever make it then we’ll buy them all a (decent) pint of beer with more than 3% ABV.
