If there’s one ‘newish’ Nordic band I recommend to anyone willing to listen to me then it’s Swedish outfit Girl Scout, the four-piece delivering an always entertaining mix of raw guitars and of course big tunes - proving as always, it really is always about the ‘tunes’. For those of us in the UK it helps that they’ve become fairly regular visitors over here, bravely battling the costs to tour the smaller venues that hold the indie music scene together, as well as finding their feet on slightly bigger stages thanks to a prestige tour support slot with Alvvays. Latest EP ‘Headache’ showcases 6 excellent Girl Scout tracks, from the frenzied indie hit ‘I Just Needed You To Know’, which the band have huge fun playing live, to the fragile title track ‘Headache’. As much as I enjoy the big earthy sound these guys make, it’s their astute lyrics and often caustic observations that set the band apart, as they do in lead track 'Desert Island Movies: “they all know things about wine now.... thirty five fucking dollars to make it feel like they are upper class”.
Girl Scout return to the UK in February, and have 2 more dates in Sweden before the end of the year. More details on Facebook.
