Green Tea Bitches (Denmark / China) - ‘Bad Taste’ (single)

So here’s a typical Nordic Music Review curiosity who’ve just released their debut track and probably haven’t been featured in many places. Green Tea Bitches are a Chinese / Danish electro post-punk outfit who seem to thrive on contradiction, describing debut track ‘Bad Taste’ as either “really bad pop” or “really cool post-punk,” depending on your perspective. They’re also probably too Chinese for Denmark, too Danish for China, and too loud for almost everyone.
But not for us, of course. What I love about ‘Bad Taste’ is how it rattles along at an irresistible catchy pace, and somehow it’s so groovy that it’ll makes you want to dance around the kitchen as if your green tea has been infused with cheap vodka and Sichuan peppercorns.
And personally I’m firmly in the cool post-punk camp. Deadpan synths sit happily beneath the spiky, confrontational vocals, giving the track an edge. But it’s also not to be taken too seriously. Vocalist Quinn Liu seems the type to shout at you from the stage that you have bad taste, but then join you at the bar for a Lemon Meringue Pietini. This is a band clearly out to have as much fun as possible, which is refreshing given how much time we spend featuring artists staring mournfully into a pine forest. .
We look forward to future releases from a band that I’ll helpfully describe as the ‘best Chinese / Danish post punk band on the planet’.
