Norwegian rising star Iris has been showing serious promise for a while now. Last years emotive ‘Lavender and Heaven’ was one of the best songs of the year, and the acoustic version of 2019’s “Inside A Car” EP was a triumph too.
For this latest track, ‘Voodoo Voodoo’, she’s changed her approach a little, opting for a more commercial sound. Teaming up with fellow Norwegian SKAAR (who you may recognise from her recent cover of ‘The Scientist’ - it shows that Iris is more than capable of raising the tempo a little.
Taken from her upcoming debut album “Love and other disasters” and inspired by the production style of Banks and Lorde, ‘Voodoo Voodoo’ a more upbeat, less emotionally intense track that works best played loud. “I tapped into my demonic alter ego and summoned my sidekick SKAAR to conjure up some dark magic infused with pure bitch power," says Iris of the track, which is produced again with Askjell Solstrand. "To be honest, this is the least serious of my songs, but at the same time it made me so happy when we wrote it, so in a way it also means a lot to me? It's 100% fiction and driven purely by guilty pleasures, even though we both eat boys for breakfast from time to time."
With more of the same slated to appear on “Love and Other Disasters” it will be interesting to hear how Iris’ sound has progressed from the somewhat more timid creature we were first introduced to several years ago. For now though, it’s time to enjoy ‘Voodoo Voodoo’ and the energy it brings.
The track was released today 29th January. Find Iris on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. SKAAR is on Instagram.
