NP York 🇩🇰 - ‘What’s Next?’ (album)

So after the murky if melodic Spacestation, we turn to another artist arriving with a second album and another question. Danish songwriter NP York asks the rather ominous ‘What’s Next?’, although thankfully this time the answer doesn’t appear to involve another train being swallowed by the North Sea.

Instead, this is a much more elegant and sometimes dreamy affair, built around well crafted songwriting, bold melodies and expansive, atmospheric instrumentation. There’s a sense of scale here, yet lyrically it feels more personal, telling apparently apparently ‘the strange distance that emerges between who you were and who you are becoming’.

It’s true that tracks such as the confident, almost grandiose, Walk on By’ and ‘LIE!’ have the bigger melodic sections, the latter with an almost Oasis type swagger, but actually my favourite moments are the more reflective intimate tracks, notably in ‘Let’s Talk’ and the simple if melancholy charms of ‘HAPPY NEW YEAR’.

Np York is currently about to head out on tour in Denmark. Check his Instagram page for details.
