So just a quick diversion over to Finland for a new single I’ve enjoyed listening to this morning, and from a band I haven’t featured before, Pisara, a Finnish four-piece originally from the Oulu area. The new single is entitled ‘Mustaa lunta’ (Black Snow) and they describe it as a song that ‘sits between metal and pop without picking a side’. That actually grabbed my attention, along with a comment they made about releasing it on Midsummers Eve - and judging from the slightly melancholy lyrical content of ‘Mustaa lunta’ they seem to be the type of band to release a song in July pointing out the evenings are already getting darker again.

Anyway I really like the instrumental sound on this in particular. The opening piano theme is really simple (other than a minor 6th or something) but works really well, whilst the contrasts on guitars between metal and Spanish influences make the whole thing quite interesting and different. The chorus is catchy too.. Helpfully their video translates the lyrics into English, which seems to lead to the central line ‘Sometimes I wish someone would come and say that everything is fine even though we both know it's not".

This is Pisara’s 3rd single on return from a 15 year hiatus, and it sounds like they’re having fun making new music.

(As a side note the title Black Snow got me thinking about the brilliant Finnish band Delay Trees, because I was pretty sure they released a track with the same name. Turns out it I was mixing up 2 of their songs, Black Ice and Blame it on the Snow, but both tracks are worth checking out).
