Áslaug– If you will / Hollow (single from self titled EP)

This EP came out in March but we just became aware of it.

Áslaug is an Icelandic-Dutch indie pop artist who recently released her debut self-titled EP, and an accompanying short film consisting of all tracks from the release.

I chose ‘If you will’/Hollow’ simply because it is the track with the most instant appeal with its repetitive synth riff and vocal machinations. At times she reminds me of Dutch artist Naaz, and at others of Aurora.

The second half of the song, the part that I assume is ‘Hollow’ (you can easily think it finished early) is mainly instrumental. On first listening it’s like a glottal stop and doesn’t register positively. But with successive hearings it becomes integral.

The other tracks on the EP are quite different, mainly ballads, but all of them with a tune. She takes inspiration from artists like The Japanese House, HAIM and Lykke Li, but the artist I hear the most in there is probably Ren Harvieu, which is quite a complement because Harvieu has an astonishing voice. Since her debut single ‘Take From Me’ (also on the EP), she’s played the Eurosonic/Noorderslag festival, in January of this year, which often kick-starts careers.

There is also a film of the tracks.

You can find her on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
