So the aim this weekend is to cover four Nordic post-rock releases. Yesterday it was After-Math. Today we return to a relatively new favourite, Swedish duo ÅHM.
We’ve written about them recently, but this week they’ve released ‘Eliana Never Sleeps’, which immediately grabbed me with a blistering rush and an opening guitar riff that explodes into life. But unlike ‘Broken Beams’, which was coated in melancholy (if melancholy can, in fact, be applied like varnish), Eliana Never Sleeps instinctively felt more positive, so I asked the band to explain more. Anders from the band has kindly given us an exclusive insight:
“I wanted to describe something other than the usual anxiety and misery my lyrics are usually about. This lyrics are more positive and hopeful and the core of the song is that there is something good, a light (Eliana) that watches over us. not a God but a light that never goes out. I chose the name Eliana based on the etymological origin which can be traced back to Greek and Hebrew. Sun, light etc… Her perfume and the three notes (cedar, gardenia, jasmine) symbolize different things that are referenced in the lyrics. The listener can quickly search for it online and then make an interpretation’.
I like the idea of a light that watches over us, but actually the best part is the sheer noise they create, which quite frankly is a shelf trembling 5 1/2 minutes of neighbour-bothering Nordic catharsis.
